Green Bay seems at a crossroads.
The moment they read out the name Jordan Love in round one of the NFL draft, drama has surrounded the Packers – rightfully or not.
Aaron Rodgers has been a generationally great quarterback but his play has dipped in the past couple of seasons. The greatness is still there but he now looks like a veteran who can no longer get everything done on his own. He needs legitimate help.
That help did not arrive in the draft.
Running back AJ Dillon arrived in round two and tight end Josiah Deguara in the very next round but both will need to exceed draft experts estimations to have an immediate impact in Green Bay.
DaVante Adams is a star receiver but take him away and Rodgers has very little else to go to. Inconsistent former Panther Devin Funchess is probably the team’s WR 2.
The Pack went 13-3 last season but were hammered twice by San Francisco.
Aaron Jones had a great season in the run-pass game scoring 19 touchdowns and catching 49 passes. He will need to replicate that output for the team to make another run.
Defensively, things are sound but not game-breaking.
It’s a defence bereft of household names but early last season was playing well. They were ninth in the NFL for points allowed.
It’s hard to see how this roster got better in the off-season and unless Rodgers’ play spikes at age 36, Green Bay could be in danger of losing the grip on the NFC North with Minnesota on the march.
