NZ Show Day

Tara
Tiger Tara ran second in last year’s FFA, can he write those wrongs in this edition ?

The show rolls on – literally. Tomorrow is Show Day at Addington Raceway with another bonanza of Harness Racing for fans and punters.

Here’s how I see the Group 1 New Zealand Free-For-All playing out plus a few other sneaky hopes.

Cup Day was kind to us landing seven winners and the first four in order in the Cup but Show Day is another challenge. Here’s hoping we find a few more winners.

Enjoy!

1 JACK’S LEGEND $8 – Zachary Butcher for Barry Purdon
Just sixth on Tuesday but gets a lovely opportunity here. He won the three-year-old Jewels beating Ultimate Machete, Thefixer, Let It Ride and others after Zachary Butcher handed up the lead then zoomed up the lane for a win at nearly 50/1. Handing to a Cruz Bromac could see him in a magnificent position but is he going well enough to capitalise…

2 TURN IT UP $4.40 – Mark Purdon for All Stars
Brilliant winning on Cup Day and gets his chance to compete with some of the big guns. Mark Purdon jumps aboard and they’re also talking ID18 so he has to be some hope in this, especially from the gate.

3 PAT’S DELIGHT $11 – Cran Dalgety
Never a legitimate threat in a strangely run Junior FFA where All Stars runners were swapping positions regularly. Closed ground in a 55.8 second last half so it would not surprise to see him among the placings here.

4 SPANKEM $14 – Tim Williams for All Stars
I backed him for this immediately after his impressive Kaikoura Cup win. Traditionally, many say running in the Cup is the perfect formula for winning the FFA but Ultimate Machete bucked that trend last year and racing is so hard on these open class horses nowadays. He’d still be an upset result but he’s a good each way bet at those odds.

6 CRUZ BROMAC $4.80 – Natalie Rasmussen for All Stars
Is this crop any better than the Len Smith Mile group that he beat last season ? There were multiple Group 1 winners in that one and you’d argue he’s going at least as good currently. He can lead for fun here and you’d think he could pace close to 1:52 on his own which could nearly be good enough to win. Like him.

7 EAMON MAGUIRE $18 – Blair Orange for All Stars
Was handy enough in the Cup, running fifth which was promising considering most think he’s best suited to shorter racing. The gate is ordinary for him with plenty of speed inside so where he gets to in the run might determine his fate for him. Not for me.

9 TIGER TARA $2 – Todd McCarthy for Kevin Pizzuto
I would be on the next plane home. Trainer Kevin Pizzuto says ID18 is his main goal so drawing nine in this means he is certain for a gut-busting run. Breezing for 2000m in the Cup would have left a mark so I’m presuming he’s skipping the FFA.
